The hope of the Family Rosary Crusade is that every family in our parish will heed Our Blessed Mother’s call at Fatima to pray the Rosary daily for peace in our world and especially in our families. The family is known as “the domestic church” where each member, under the God-given authority of the father and mother, can grow in holiness and carry the Gospel message of hope and mercy to the world that is so in need of it.
What is the mission of the family? “…It is necessary to go back to seeing the family as the sanctuary of life. The family is indeed sacred: it is the place in which life – the gift of God – can be properly welcomed and protected against the many attacks to which it is exposed, and can develop in accordance with what constitutes authentic human growth. In the face of the so-called culture of death, the family is the heart of the culture of life…” Pope John Paul II, “Centesimus Annus,” paragraph 39.
Our Family Rosary Crusade is modeled after Father Patrick Peyton’s Rosary Crusade, established in 1942. Newly ordained and in gratitude to the Blessed Mother for a cure of his sickly condition growing up, he started a campaign to pray the Rosary daily. 1942 was the darkest time for the United States in World War II, suffering defeat after defeat on the field of battle. Father Peyton knew the great need for prayer for our nation and our families. He coined the phrase “The family that prays together, stays together.”
Many people who faithfully recite the Rosary daily can attest to its power and beauty. They can tell you of the countless prayers that were answered and of their renewed faith and trust in God. One of the many books recounting these answered prayers is 101 Inspirational Stories of the Rosary by Sister Patricia Proctor, OSC.
The Rosary was given to St Dominic by the Blessed Mother, at the beginning of the 13th century. On October 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II published an apostolic letter titled “Rosarium Virginis Mariae.” He suggested additions to the traditional 15 mysteries of the Rosary. They are the Luminous Mysteries (Mysteries of Light) which center on the life of Christ.
Our Blessed Mother will be the leader and director of our crusade. We will rely on her to direct our every step. May God bless you and your dear family as we build together our domestic churches and in turn strengthen our parish and the community around us.
